In my last post “Overwhelming, Thank you for picking up the trash and 10 pm, go to bed!” I was totally overwhelmed by all the new people, places, structures and experiences.
Meanwhile, the boarding house gets more familiar to me and I get to know everything. Now I am one of those who explains the laundry system to the new people or the website where we log out of the boarding house when we leave the campus.
That’s why I’m so confused when I’m confronted with something new for me and I don’t know what to do or where to go and which bus to take. Then I remember that I’m here for only ten days and I am still new.
So I spent last Thursday with my school-assigned buddy Siya, who is also in my music class. I asked her to show me Singapore the way she likes and not just the sightseeing points, as I could find them with Google Street View within ten seconds.
So we started our day at the Tiong Bahru Wet Market. This is a kind of weekly market, just daily. In addition, there is a Hawker Centre, which are permanently installed food stalls. Hawkers exist all over Singapore.
I tried Sugarcane juice, a drink of squeezed sugar cane refined with lime. It is like lemonade, just without the exhausting sticky sweetness, but pleasantly refreshing. Tasty!
In addition, we bought Baos, which are dumplings filled with meat, and in the Tiong Bahru Bakery we bought a caramelized paff pastry thing (not typical Singaporean, but delicious!). We went to VivoCity, a mall in southern Singapore. There we sat down with Fried Rice, Pandan Kaya Buns (similar to donuts only in green, which are filled with the coconut jam Kaya) and our other food on the terrace and enjoyed the view over Sentosa, Singapore’s holiday island.
Towards evening we took a short bike tour past the Central Business District. Beautiful when the ocean with the large cargo ship passes by on the left and the sun sets behind the Hotel Marina Bay Sands.
The day was very nice – also because of the lovely accompaniment. Thank you so much, Siya!
On Saturday we (people from the Boarding House) visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Again and again I am thrilled, how the plants, which we import into Germany and tearfully maintain in the pot on the windowsill, here simply grow under the open sky, also on the side strip on the road! (Yes, sure, it’s logical!)
My first week was quite eventful, but that’s great and I love it!
